Kitchens have evolved enormously over the last five decades. It seems that there are four determining factors behind this. First, resulting from the advancement of electric appliances, and second, how kitchens are used today is functionally very different. In general, we use the kitchen as a family and friend gathering place more than just for cooking. We use kitchens in both a practical sense for food preparation – and in a social context as kitchens have become a central part of our main living space. The third factor is that as a rule, we don’t spend much time in the kitchen preparing meals from scratch. With the enormous amount of prepared and processed foods available, we don’t think of cooking as a basic necessity. The fourth important factor is The simple reality that cooking fresh meals daily is no longer a necessity. Most of us don’t run around every day with a basket assembling the ingredients for the day’s meals. With all the prepared, canned, processed, and complete meals available, there’s no pressure to cook just to sustain ourselves. It seems we look forward to cooking for enjoyment, and as part of a social activity – whether with friends or family members.
