Kitchens are very different now then they were even a few decades ago. There are probably four underlying reasons. First, as a consequence of consumer discovery of electronic appliances, and second, the ultimate use and function of kitchens is now very different. Most of the time, we use the kitchen as a family and friend gathering place more than just for cooking. We use kitchens in both a practical sense for food preparation – and in a social context as kitchens have become a central part of our main living space. The third factor is that we cook less. With the abundant availability of prepared and processed foods, the need for dedicating kitchen space and function purely for sustenance is no longer a factor. The fourth governing factor is The simple reality that cooking fresh meals daily is no longer a necessity. Most of us don’t run around every day with a basket assembling the ingredients for the day’s meals. With all the prepared, canned, processed, and complete meals available, there’s no pressure to cook just to sustain ourselves. It seems we look forward to cooking for enjoyment, and as part of a social activity – whether with friends or family members.
