Kitchen designs and layouts are not what they used to be, even just a few decades ago. There seem to be four determining factors behind this. First, resulting from the advancement of electric appliances, and second, how kitchens are used today is functionally very different. In general, we spend as much time with family and friends in the kitchen as we do actually cooking. Kitchens have blended the basic functions of food preparation with day to day living activities. And the third factor is that as a rule, we don’t spend much time in the kitchen preparing meals from scratch. With the enormous amount of prepared and processed foods available, we don’t think of cooking as a basic necessity. The fourth important factor is The simple reality that cooking fresh meals daily is no longer a necessity. Most of us don’t run around every day with a basket assembling the ingredients of the day’s meals. With all the prepared, canned, processed, and complete meals available, there’s no pressure to cook just to sustain ourselves. It seems we look forward to cooking for enjoyment, and as part of our routine social activities – whether with friends or family members.
