History of the Kitchen in California

Kitchen designs and layouts are not what they used to be, even just a few decades ago. There seem to be four underlying reasons. First, as a consequence of consumer discovery of electronic appliances, and second, the ultimate use and function of kitchens is now very different. Most of the time, we include the kitchen as living space to enjoy, and not just for basic cooking chores. Kitchens now form an integral part of our daily living and social activities. The third important influencing factor is that we spend only a fraction of our time in meal preparation as compared to even a generation ago. With so many prepared and semi-prepared foods available, cooking is no longer a basic need. The fourth determining factor is The simple reality that cooking fresh meals daily is no longer a necessity. Most of us don’t run around every day with a basket assembling the ingredients for the day’s meals. With all the prepared, canned, processed, and complete meals available, there’s no pressure to cook just to sustain ourselves. It seems we look forward to cooking for enjoyment, and as part of a social activity – whether with friends or family members.
