Kitchen layouts and designs have changed significantly over the last few decades. It can be said that there are four basic reasons for this. First, due to the advent of electronic appliances and what we now call kitchen gadgets, and second, due to the changed function of the kitchen. Basically, we spend as much time with family and friends in the kitchen as we do actually cooking. Kitchens have blended the basic functions of food preparation with day to day living activities. And the third factor is that we’ve dramatically reduced the amount of time spent in our kitchens actually cooking. Since you can buy just about anything prepared or semi-prepared, cooking is not considered vital anymore. The fourth important factor is Because there’s no pressure to cook for sustenance any more. Certainly not every day, and definitely not from scratch. The grocery stores are filled to the rafters with cans, boxes, partially, and with fully prepared meals. Take notice of the size of the fresh meat and the vegetable departments as a percentage of an entire store’s size – they’ve been shrinking slowly. As a result, most of us cook for fun and with no stress related to the basic need to prepare full meals every day from fresh ingredients.
It’s quite amazing how many things you’ll need to factor in when planning and designing your new kitchen or bathroom. Of the long list of things to factor in, a few of them are decisions about hardware, cabinets, lighting, flooring, accents, counter types, sink styles, paint colors, appliances, and overall layout. The process begins with considering the functionality needs of the kitchen or bathroom, then wrap the design around it. Functionality in use of space is very important. To get it right, your designer will need to be quite proficient at managing multiple project criteria. Otherwise you may find yourself in a beautiful space that’s less than adequate in use. Start the process with a basic and straightforward design layout, then change things up as you like. Even up the last hour before you place the final order, changes are possible. After that point, your costs can get out of hand.
