History of the Kitchen in Virginia

Kitchens are very different now then they were even a few decades ago. There are probably four primary drivers behind this. First, because of the introduction of electric appliances and second, because the basic function of kitchens has changed. Fundamentally, we use the kitchen as a family and friend gathering place more than just for cooking. We use kitchens in both a practical sense for food preparation – and in a social context as kitchens have become a central part of our main living space. The third factor is that as a part of our day, we don’t spend a lot time actually cooking meals, and not usually on a daily basis. Since there’s a huge variety of canned and processed food, cooking, as a funtions is no longer a basic necessity. The fourth influencing factor is that since cooking has moved away from the practical to the fun, the emergence of hand held and built in kitchen appliances has created a new breed of cook. The type of cook whose primary aim is to explore and experiment with various types of foods and is not concerned with having to learn the absolute basics of cooking. There’s no pressure to cook broths or breads or sauces from scratch anymore, since they can be bought ready made.

The Design Process in Virginia

There are a myriad of factors to consider when planning a kitchen or a bathroom remodeling project. These factors include deciding on lighting, appliances, cabinets, paint colors, sink styles, counter types, accents, flooring, hardware and layout. The whole design and planning process starts with the overall layout of the entire space with a view to create a balance between all the various components. To make sure you end up with what you expect, your designer will need to be very thorough to be able to blend these criteria. Otherwise you could be left with a beautiful but not very functional space. Begin with a practical and basic design layout, then make changes step by step. Adjusting your colors, cabinet styles and hardware choices, etc., incrementally will let you see how the whole ensemble will work together.
